Austin works creatively with his students to meet their goals, whether that be developing technical mastery, expanding their understanding of music, or simply enjoying the process of learning this expressive skill. Austin is a self-taught guitarist, but draws on a diverse set of musical experiences (from Trinidadian ‘parang’ to church choirs to hosting open mics) that allow him to be flexible in his approach. Setting goals and practicing often are key drivers of progress, but creativity and fun make progressing worthwhile. Therefore, lessons with Austin incorporate structured and spontaneous elements, and the holistic experience is rewarding in both the short and long term.
Austin asks that his students bring their entire musical experience with them to lessons: the music they love, ideas they have for their own creations, reasons for pursuing guitar lessons, and so on. All musical ideas are worth considering, and they can help connect the dots between what we already know and what we’re trying to understand. This applies whether you’re picking up a guitar for the first time or you’re just a few licks shy of playing like Eddie Van Halen.
